This is my first article on this blog I just started to debunk an article by The Federalist Papers, it started as a comment on the Facebook page of The Washington Post but as it was too long it was deleted because they thought it was advertisement or something, so here is my comment.
Before I start my comment let me just say that I am completely biased in this matter because I am french so I don’t have anything to do with US politics, the only thing I believe in is the truth. I’m just here to list some of the important sources of the facts I found in the article « How the South skews America » by Michael Lind for Politico. The only thing I would say about his article is that he should have included the sources because it made my work of investigation much more difficult nonetheless here are the sources I found for the major claims that The Federalist Papers via The Gateway Pundit declared to debunk by just quoting the article adding their opinions and never trying to prove with sources that Michael Lind was wrong. The first thing was about the low rates of intergenerational social mobility in the U.S caused NOT ONLY (in alll capsed) by the south but by a great majority of southern states here is the study by equality-of-opportunity.org to support this case:
Then it is about economic inequality where Michael Lind includes the states of New York and California before saying that the south has a lot of states with the biggest economic inequalities, which is true I found this article on Wikipedia that is really well done and explains easily how it is measured, of course the sources are included at the bottom of the page if you have any problems with the fact that it is a Wikipedia article:
After this we have the claim that the most religious Americans were all found in Southern states, with the exceptions of Mormon Utah and semi-Southern Oklahoma, this was easy to found so here is the study by Gallup:
Then we have southern violence with the claim that
« White Southerners are more likely than white northerners to respond to insults with increased testosterone and aggression, according to social scientists »
So I found the research paper by the scientists which is 16 pages long but explains in great details the study:
Or we have in a more readable way the Wikipedia page with all the sources including a lot of the research paper I just linked to that explains really well the study:
Here for the 2012 elections event though I think it’s not that important it is one of the claims that the south voted more for Romney than Obama so here is the map of the Library of Congress:
On the next topic I was happy to see that the author of the article wrote the names of the scientists at the origin of the study which he quoted by saying
“The larger the number of slaves in his or her county of residence in 1860, the greater the probability that a white Southerners today will identify as a Republican, express opposition to race-coded policies such as affirmative action and express greater racial resentment towards African Americans.”
I found the study really easily by chance the quote was just at the begining of the Harvard study of 21 pages which is just here for your enjoyment:
Finally the article isn’t calling to a genocide of all of the inhabitants of the south of the United States (I can’t believe I have to explain this), he says at the end
« But there is hope: A combination of demographic change and generational change is weakening the ability of the old-fashioned South to skew American politics and culture in the future. Peripheral Southern states like Florida and Virginia are increasingly competitive, and the Deep South may join them in time. In Texas once-reactionary cities like Houston and Dallas are competing with Austin as tolerant meccas for transplants who prefer the Sun Belt to the Old South. Immigration into the South from other countries and American regions is breaking down local oligarchies and old folkways. »
He just says that society and people evolve with time, we are horrified to know what we’ve done (as human beings) in the past and this will continue on until we can hope one day we could ALL live with the same rights and freedoms we ALL deserve as human beings, he puts fates in future generations to change the states of all this statistics and studies I just linked to. I hope this will help anyone with a little patience and a thirst for knowledge and maybe convince some to find and read the sources of the articles you use in your arguments because it is only that way that we can have the truth.
